Fine vines and finer times – a sensory escape to Steenberg Wine Farm

From the minute I arrived at Steenberg Wine Farm, a sense of serenity washed over me. This historic estate is one of the oldest farms in South Africa’s Cape – if not the oldest, having been established in 1682. Yet, despite its expansion into a five-star hotel, spa, and golf course, Steenberg fortunately retains its rustic charm and agricultural soul.
The hotel’s five-star rooms are the epitome of understated elegance. My Premier Room, with its lofty ceilings and Super King-sized bed, felt spacious yet cosy, thanks to its soft palette of dark wood and cool blue hues. The private terrace, overlooking endless rows of vines set against a mountain backdrop, proved the perfect spot to unwind on a sun lounger before dinner.
Mornings at Steenberg were nothing short of magical. Forget the harsh shrill of an alarm – here, I woke gently to golden sunlight filtering through the window, while the short, leisurely stroll to breakfast offered spectacular views of the rugged mountains. Breakfast itself was a gourmet affair, with the chefs ready to create any dish I fancied, and the warm, attentive staff made me feel right at home.
When it comes to dining, Bistro Sixteen82 – named after the farm’s founding year – is a culinary gem, offering a feast for the senses. With the restaurant full every night, it’s clear that its reputation precedes it. Tempted always by oysters, I couldn’t resist the Saldanha oysters, served simply with a shallot vinaigrette. Fresh, briny, and perfectly chilled – they were nothing short of divine.
The culinary delights didn’t stop there. The roasted pork belly, with cumin pumpkin purée, apple and carrot chutney, and a Bo-Kaap spiced jus, was a rich, flavourful triumph. Equally tantalising was the beef fillet, paired with creamy cauliflower, crumbed mushrooms, and a green bean salsa. Each dish was beautifully presented, the flavours refined yet comforting – a testament to the skill of the kitchen. To say my mouth was watering before the food had even arrived at the table is an understatement!
Lucky enough to be give a tour of the Steenberg wine cellar, which very few get to see, I was intrigued to see the care and meticulous craftsmanship that goes into producing the farm’s ranges of classic, flagship and sparkling wines (Steenberg produces some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cap Classique wine in South Africa). Wine lovers can book a premium tasting experience to sample their wines – a treat for the palate.
After indulging in the estate’s gourmet offerings, the spa beckoned me with the promise of rejuvenation. Though intimate in size, it offers everything needed for a restorative escape. My treatment left me feeling physically and mentally revived – the ideal precursor to an afternoon by the Pool House, where the gentle hum of nature and cool waters lulled me into a blissful state of repose. Cocktail in hand, I watched the afternoon sun slowly dip below the mountains, painting the sky in soft hues of gold.
For those who prefer activity over relaxation, Steenberg Golf Club is a must. Designed by Peter Matkovich and set against the breathtaking backdrop of Table Mountain, this championship 18-hole course is consistently ranked among South Africa’s finest. The course has been designed to make full use of natural features and hazards such as the vineyards, pine forest and waterways, offering a scenic yet challenging experience, with sweeping views and immaculate fairways. Players should note the 14th hole, which features the largest green in Africa at 76 metres in length. I don’t play golf, but my, this was a beautiful course, which I walked around in total admiration.
