Dr. Erich Schulte is our first ever Luxury Leader from within the beauty industry. Here we ask him some in-depth questions in order to find out more about his pioneering brand, QMS Medicosmetics.
How has your career as a cosmetic surgeon influenced your understanding and approach to the world of medi-cosmetics?
I am fortunate, as my career as a trauma surgeon and as an aesthetic surgeon has enabled me to research and lecture all over the world on skin ageing and skin regeneration. I have been able to work extensively on researching new technologies, skincare delivery systems and formulations, and have remained at the forefront of anti-ageing product development.
Despite your surgical background would you argue that the future of cosmetic surgery is non-invasive?
This is very subjective. For many clients, invasive surgery is a chosen and preferred option to assist combating anti-ageing. However, for many, this is not a chosen route! QMS Medicosmetics offers anti-ageing solutions but does not use invasive techniques. I like to consider that QMS Medicosmetics products compliment invasive surgery and is an alternative for clients looking to achieve similar results without resorting to such measures.
QMS is the only topically administered product of its kind – how do you feel it compares with more invasive procedures?
We live in a culture of quick fix and instant results, so I often advise clients that patience is required to achieve the most optimum results. With QMS Medicosmetics, we can improve the texture of your skin and optimum results are achieved by using the QMS Medicosmetics skin regeneration system for at least 120 days.
What is the key to maintaining youthful, flawless skin?
Nutricosmetics are essential. I developed Intravital that reconditions, regenerates and protects the skin. Hydrolized Collagen stimulates collagen synthesis and the active ingredients in the capsules are bio-assimilating, ensuring that they reach the damaged cells via the blood vessels. Remain out of the sun. Always remember that prevention is better than cure. And enjoy life in moderation!
How should women be encouraged to adapt their skin regime as they age?
Women and men should be encouraged to commence a skin care regime and maintain this as they age. An optimum skincare regeneration system would be to commence a collagen replacement therapy. Collagen is critical for the moisturising process which keeps skin tone, youth and elasticity. The skin’s production of collagen decreases as skin ages, leading to loss of moisture and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as elasticity is reduced. QMS Medicosmetics reverses the appearance of ageing by addressing the underlying cause – loss of collagen.
You have pioneered the use of natural soluble collagen that can penetrate the skin’s epidermis – what led you to this revolutionary application?
As a trauma surgeon, my patients were mainly severe accident and burn wound victims. At the time, surgery could lead to the reconstruction of the shape of the face but skin remained scarred and damaged. I researched wound healing and found collagen to be highly significant. I knew that if I could find a way to reintroduce collagen into the skin, scar formation would be reduced and skin could be regenerated. I then went on to work in the field of aesthetic and cosmetic surgery and continued to scientifically investigate skin regeneration. This led me to develop a method to condition natural soluble collagens so that they can be re-absorbed into the epidermis and be applied topically to skin, thereby allowing skin to regenerate. Due to visible improvements in skin texture, as well as skin healing when used in post-operative treatment, I used the products for pre-operative treatment as well and found exceptional results could be achieved. I then developed QMS Medicosmetics as a complete skincare and rejuvenation system of products. I continue to research processes of skin damage and formulate effective treatments to incorporate into QMS Medicosmetics at my Derma-Research-Laboratories – Dr. Med. Erich Schulte in Germany. My research is focused on delivery techniques to enhance the metabolism of the ingredients in addition to searching for unique ingredients and high-tech delivery systems. My latest research for Cellular Marine, based on stem cell research of sea fennel, is a quantum leap in cosmetics.
The QMS brand started over twenty years ago. In that time you have led the way in skin regeneration from collagen to sea fennel stem cells as a skin protector, so what is next for QMS?
Delivery systems and techniques to enhance the metabolism of ingredients is definitely the future of QMS Medicosmetics treatments and products. Some of my latest techniques to enhance the effects of active ingredients in skin cells include the following:
Nanosome technology, i.e. used in AHA formulations to provide a unique upload with active ingredients. With this technology, it is possible to upload, for example, an AHA formulation with active ingredients which are gradually released up to 12 hours per application even though the AHA is washed off after 10 – 15 minutes.
Micellized molecules, to penetrate deeper into the skin. This technique enables me to get effective ingredients deep into the skin by removing the non–active parts of the molecules without changing the virtues and properties of the ingredients.
Messenger technology, to create effects beyond the basal barrier. As it is forbidden by law to provoke pharmaceutical effects with cosmeceutical formulations in dermal layers – which are below the basal barrier – we can produce these wanted effects indirectly by using this particular messenger technology.
Increase the skin cell metabolism by approximately 50%, through the use of 98% pure oxygen. Normal air contains 21% oxygen. By using an oxygen concentrator, you can increase the partial pressure of oxygen by 5 times. By doing this, you are able to almost double the metabolism rate of the skin cells. That means that with this technique, you dramatically enhance the utilization and effect of active ingredients (each of our 3 state-of-the-art treatment rooms has this bespoke machine unique to QMS Medicosmetics).
Your skin-care products cure and prevent, enhancing a natural beauty that is the antithesis of the pillowed and plumped look that is achieved by conventional uses of collagen. Is it the compound or the application that makes the difference?
The delivery technique is what makes the difference. The QMS Medicosmetics skin regeneration system commences with its foundation product which is the Classic Collagen Set of Day Collagen and Night Collagen and Exfoliant Fluid. It is a daily routine, and by applying these products to freshly prepared skin, they are evenly absorbed by the skin and give remarkable results.
QMS garnered a cult following when you offered 30 minute facials in the beauty halls of Selfridges. Your new salon in Chelsea is causing just as much stir. What is your most popular treatment at the salon?
The Classic Collagen Facial Treatment is the most popular. We have had tremendous success since the launch of our Chelsea Flagship. Clients express they have never had facials quite like ours. Our treatments and state-of-the-art facial treatment rooms are unique to London.
Has the recession affected the medical beauty industry or is it an invincible sector that women will continue to invest in?
The industry is not immune to the downturn. Companies have to work harder to ensure best results and efficacy from the products and services they offer. We are fortunate not to have seen a downturn in trade; actually, we have been pleasantly surprised that our London Flagship has exceeded our expectations; footfall has been strong, repeat appointments remain extremely high and future appointments booked solid for several weeks. It seems women will not compromise on their youth.
