Two new hotel spas open in New York and London.
Sense Spa at The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, New York
The foxed mirrors and gray and silver tones give the new Sense, A Rosewood Spa at The Carlyle an air of urban sophistication, with the Art Deco touches that echo this Upper East Side landmark hotel’s style and history. The two-level spa with chandelier-lit, vaulted staircase was designed by Mark Zeff of Zeffdesign, and the five treatment rooms, relaxation room and men’s and women’s changing rooms exude New York élan, as well as the feel of an urban oasis. The spa features Sisley’s Phtyo-Aromatique products containing natural plant extracts for treatments, facials and massages, and is the new home to the Yves Durif salon. Many facials and massages are 90 minutes which allow for full and complete relaxation, and the signature combination treatments are three hours, more than enough time to slough off the city stress.

Anne Sémonin at 51 Buckingham Gate, London
The French beauty company continues its expansion into spas, taking over the Spa at 51 at the 51 Buckingham Gate hotel and residences in the heart of London. (Lucknam Park near Bath and Sandy Lane in Barbados are the latest resorts to launch with Anne Sémonin treatments and products.) The Spa at 51 relaunched last summer with trained Anne Sémonin aestheticians, three treatment rooms and a full roster of facials, massages, wraps and scrubs for men and women using botanical and marine products and essential oils. The no-nonsense and thorough European treatments makes a change for those who are looking for a change from many spas’ Asian rituals and routines. The deep release massage with hot stones, for 60 or 90 minutes, concentrates on muscle tension and the body’s chi lines for extra decompression, and the spa’s quiet setting in the hotel’s inner courtyard helps the rejuvenation last a little longer.
Facials and massages from £70.
