Perini Navi, world leader in the luxury sailing yacht industry. Perini Navi is today the only shipyard in the world that has the necessary skills and know-how to design, engineer and could its own yachts.
Perini Navi has firmly established a leading position on the World market of sailing yachts above 40m. With its renowned sailing systems, its unique design and its reputation for quality, Perini has designed and built over 46 large yachts in a relatively short time. What makes a Perini Navi immediately recognisable from a distance is the design of the deckhouse, with its curved windows and long flying bridge. Yet, rather than for its technological breakthroughs, Perini Navi is now universally acclaimed for its quality of construction and interior finish, and its unique comfort both in harbour and at sea: features which have set an entirely new standard for large sailing vessels.
Perini Navi was established in the early Eighties with the aim of creating large, comfortable sailing yachts, capable of being handled by a single person. Today, the revolutionary control systems designed and developed by Fabio Perini and his team, represent the state of the art in sailing technology, and have become a worldwide standard in the shipbuilding industry.
Credited with a combination of technical brilliance and first class design, Perini Navi yachts have always been in a class of their own. In 1982, unable to find a yacht suited to his personal concepts and ideas, Fabio Perini built the first prototype of what would prove to be the most successful series of large sailing yachts in the world.
After the first vessel built in 1983, Perini Navi built boats of 43 metres to then proceed with a series of boats of 46m, 48m, 50m, 52m and 58m until reaching today’s models which are 56m, 64m, 38m 54m and the most recent 88m Maltese Falcon.
Currently, Perini Navi is the only shipyard in the world to design, develop and build its own sailing yachts.
In the course of the years, the development of Perini Navi has been accompanied by a strategy of expansion and acquisitions, to accommodate its growing production requirements, and to provide it with the necessary technical facilities.
In 1987, a new shipyard was opened in Tuzla, Turkey – one of Istanbul’s prime industrial areas. The new yard, called Perini Istanbul Yildiz Gemi, was created within the framework of Perini Navi’s business philosophy and quality standards.
Yildiz Gemi started its activity in 1975 at its present location in the Tuzla Bay shipyard area of Istanbul. The result of the injection of foreign capital, by the yard’s principal partner, has been the transformation of some 40,000 square meters of waterfront mud into what may now be considered as one of the numbered yards in the Mediterranean basin.
At the beginning of the Nineties, a further development was made in Viareggio, Perini Navi’s home base, with the acquisition of Picchiotti, a historical yard, famous for its quality builds and pioneering skills. The Cantiere Picchiotti dates all the way back to the 17th century at Limite sull’Arno. The yard later moved to Viareggio where it became one of the cornerstones of the Italian boat building industry. Its output included everything from wooden sail boats to iron-built Italian Navy vessels and racing hulls. Picchiotti has established a record in building motoryachts, from the 15 metre Esperia of 1905 to the famous 36.5 metre Kon Tiki of 1947. It was the first to build motorcruisers such as the Giglio 10.25 metre, Giannutri 14.50 metre, Gorgona, Giraglia and Mistral. The Perini Navi Group has recently decided to widen its scope of activity and embrace the world of motor yachts with its historic brand Picchiotti. The new range of Pichiotti Motoryachts will begin with an exciting new design by Vitruvius Ltd together with French naval architect Philippe Briand. The first yacht of the series, the Vitruvius Explorer 50m. Already the second motor-yacht under the Picchiotti brand has been sold: the Vitruvius Explorer 55m. Hull number C.2156 will be built in compliance with ice-class standards, in order to complete the North-West passage, the sea route through the Artic Ocean, via the water-ways amidst the Canadian Arctic Archipelago connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The latest acquisition to date is that of Cantieri Navali Beconcini, in La Spezia, another jewel in the Italian shipbuilding tradition, fully equipped to provide assistance and maintenance facilities for the Perini Navi fleet and to classic yachts, and to expand the production capacity of the Perini Navi Group. Beconcini Cantieri Navali S.r.l. specializes in the rebuild and refit of both old and traditional sailing and motor vessels. Beconcini started as a builder in 1959 but later, in the Eighties, found a profitable niche in the refitting business. Over the years Beconcini restored to their original beautiful condition many historic ships like Mariette, Te Vega, Candida, Croce del Sud, Aleph and Latifa. Beconcini has redefined the art of refitting with its dedicated artisans and is probably, today, the only yard in the world that is able to handle these important projects and restore them to mint condition. Also during these years, Beconcini purchased from Fincantieri a yard with 32,000sq.m of covered building areas and nearly twice area that in land. Perini Navi Group has started manufacturing in Cantieri Navali Beconcini a series of performance yachts between 120 and 150 ft. First to be launched was a 38m fast sloop – sealium alloy – designed by Philippe Briand that was delivered in 2008. Even the production of the motor yacht Vitruvius explorer designed by Philippe Briand is being here.
