Kazuya Sato – composing a new sound with the music and traditions of the past
As an award-winning multi-instrumentalist and composer, Kazuya Sato has experience with a wide range of instruments and styles of music. However, since graduating from university, he has specialised in performing with the Shinobue flute. Also known as a Takebue, this centuries-old instrument has long been a key component of artistic events such as Noh and Kabuki, ancient theatrical recitals at the heart of Japanese culture. In this film, Sato shares his extraordinary talent with us, and explains how contemporary influences, and even geography, can have a profound effect on the music being created from this most traditional of instruments.
